Abstract
In this 90-minute lecture, we explore the transformative power of documentary filmmaking as a dynamic educational tool that bridges cultures and fosters deep understanding. Centred on student-made documentaries from various parts of Southeast Asia—including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore—we delve into how creating documentaries allows students to immerse themselves in different cultures. I will discuss how engaging in documentary filmmaking compels students to become researchers, storytellers, and filmmakers. This hands-on approach enhances their critical thinking, storytelling abilities, and technical skills, moving beyond traditional classroom boundaries.
The lecture then examines how students develop empathy and global awareness by interacting directly with communities. They navigate real-world challenges, learn ethical storytelling, and often confront and overcome their own biases.
Through showcasing student documentaries, we’ll witness firsthand the unique perspectives and insights they’ve gained. These films not only highlight the rich tapestry of Southeast Asian cultures but also reflect the student’s personal growth and enhanced cultural sensitivity.
